The Changing Role of Pathology in Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

چکیده
Pathological examination has been the gold standard for diagnosis in cancer and its role has also included the elucidation of etiology, pathogenesis, clinicopathological correlation, and prognostication. The advent of newer technologies and the realization that breast cancer is heterogeneous has shifted the focus to prognostication, with increased attention being paid to the identification of morphological features and immunohistochemical markers of prognostic relevance. However, despite the massive efforts invested in the identification of immunohistochemical biomarkers in breast cancer the majority have not proven to be of value in multivariate analyses and only estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and Her2/neu expression have remained essential components of pathological examination. These 3 markers were initially employed for prognostication but their role in treatment also rendered them of predictive value. Newer molecular methods, especially high-throughput technologies, have shown that even morphologically similar subDr. Anthony S.-Y. Primary Tuberculosis of Breast: Case Report
Although breast tuberculosis still remains rare, but in endemic countries should be in differential diagnosis of breast cancer and abscess. Imaging modalities cannot distinguish between cancer and tuberculosis. Acid fast bacilli stain; culture and PCR are helpful diagnostic methods but unfortunately are not very sensitive. Negative results do not rule out this diagnosis, so it seems definite di...
متن کاملClinical and in vitro Study of Novel Long Non-Coding RNA lncUSMycN in Breast Cancer Cancer
Background: Despite recent advances in diagnosis and treatment, breast cancer remains a leading cause of death in women worldwide. Long non-coding RNAs are a new class of RNA molecules that have been shown to participate in tumorigenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of lncUSMycN in tumor samples and to evaluate its potential role in the breast cancer cell line. Metho...
متن کاملGranulomatous response with breast cancer in a developing country: A diagnostic dilemma!
Granulomatous response in association with breast cancer and within the cancer draining lymph nodes is an extremely rare phenomenon. Granulomatous inflammation is an immune response commonly seen against infectious agents and certain non-neoplastic conditions. The etiopathogenesis of granulomas associated with malignancies is not clear but it may be because of an immunologic reaction to tumour ...
متن کاملEthical Aspects of Breast Cancer Treatment
According to a universal consensus and agreement, all diagnostic, curative and rehabilitative medical intervention and biomedical research on patients as human participants, including those related to breast disease and breast cancer, must be performed in a morally acceptable manner. In other words, a medical decision would be “right” if it is ethically justifiable. Similar to diagn...

متن کاملDetection of breast cancer using non-invasive X-ray diffraction technique of hair: A preliminary study
Background: An early diagnosis of breast cancer relates directly to an accurate treatment plan and strategy. Early detection of breast cancer before its development would be a significant reduction of morbidity and mortality rates. The aim of this preliminary study is to investigate the sensitivity of Wide Angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD) method on women hair samples of healthy and breast cancer...
